Request A Callback From An Investigator

How to Counter Surveillance

Being the one hiring a private investigator to carry out surveillance is a very different proposition to being the one who is being surveilled by a private investigator. Although surveillance can put to good use by people who are in desperate need of the truth or those who are being victimized by unknown forces, there are others who can hire a private investigator for the wrong reasons.

When you have a private investigator on your tail, it can be impossible to do anything without the fear that someone may be watching your every move or even listening in to your conversations. This is why you need to think about counter-surveillance.

Counter Surveillance Techniques

Counter surveillance is any measure that you take to thwart another party's efforts to obtain information about you. This includes actions taken to detect and remove bugs from your personal space.

Some counter-surveillance techniques that could be of interest to you include:

  • Evasion: You can evade private investigators by avoiding areas that make it easy for them to take photos or record you. You can also use code words to thwart audio surveillance
  • Situation awareness: Simply looking over your shoulder from time to time can catch some private investigators unawares
  • Moving through crowds: You can lose a private investigator on your tail by passing through a crowded area
  • Buying a bug sweeper: A bug sweeper can be used to detect bugs that may be in your car, home or office.
  • Using a white noise generator: White noise can interfere with bugs that may have been placed in your vicinity by a private investigator
  • Hiring a private investigator: You can hire a private investigator to conduct a professional bug sweep or to let you know if there is someone else tailing you

Who Conducts Counter Surveillance?

Private investigators are the most likely people to be asked to conduct surveillance on you. Ironically, this also means that they're probably the best people to conduct counter-surveillance for you.

This is because:

  • Private investigators will be aware of the techniques other investigators may use to conduct surveillance on you
  • Private detectives are likely to have the tools that are needed to perform proper counter surveillance e.g. bug sweeps. Cheap tools bought online are not that reliable
  • Private investigators can also advise you on ways that you can make it much harder for other private investigators to conduct surveillance on you in the future.
