Private Detective in Rugeley

Rugeley is a town with a population of about 20 thousand people, located in the county of Staffordshire, England. Rugeley stands next to the River Trent, on the north-eastern edge of the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (formerly Royal forest.) Neighbouring towns include Cannock, Stafford, Uttoxeter and Lichfield. The town was listed in the Domesday Book; its name is likely to originate from 'Ridge lee', which means 'the hill over the field'.

The economy of Rugeley considerably intensified when the Trent and Mersey Canal was built in 1777 and especially afterwards, when railway arrived in Rugeley. From the 1950s the town also became a centre of deep shaft coal mining. In the 1960s Rugeley was growing incredibly quickly, partially thanks to construction of Rugeley A and B coal-fired power stations. One of them, opened in 1961, has already been demolished. The other one, built in 1970, was closed on 8th June 2016.

Rugeley has lots of historical buildings worth seeing. Among them are Grade II listed Brindley Bank Pumping Station, Brook House, Lloyds Bank, Red Lion Inn, Roman Catholic Church of St Joseph and St Etheldreda. The Parish Church of St Augustine of Canterbury is Grade II* listed building. It was built in 1822 as a replacement for the older church now called as The Old Chancel; its remnants can still be seen nearby.
