Private Detective in Masham

Masham is both a civil parish and a little market town within District Harrogate in North Yokrshire in the United Kingdom. The town is located on the west side of the River Ure, within Wensleydale. The Vikings introduced sheep farming to Masham, when they have invaded the area around 900 A.D. However, the Vikings have destoyed many parts of the town. There were traces of Roman settlement in Marsham, but the permanent inhabitants of the town were the Anglo-Saxons, or Angles.

Marsham used to be a bigger parish comprising of some townships including Healey with Sutton, Swinton, Ellington High and Low, Fearby, Ilton cum Pott, Ellingstring, and Burton-on-Yore. However, during the year 1866, these townships were declared as separate civil parishes. The Marketplace at Marsham was created in the eighteenth century. It is surrounded by Georgian houses now, but during earlier times, the square itself was encircled by thatched homes. The Marketplace was where the yearly Sheep Fairs were held.

The location of the Marketplace contributed to its success. Jervaulx and Fountains Abbeys are close to the Marketplace, and they have large herds of sheep. Fountains Abbey one of the biggest and best conserved Cistercian monasteries that were ruined in the country. The abbey was functional from 1132 until 1539. It is now considered as a listed building and is currently owned by the National Trust. Marsham's market is open on Sundays and on Wednesdays.
