First mentioned in Domesday book as Torentum, Thornton is a village in the county of Lancashire about 6 km to the north of Blackpool and 3 km south of Fleetwood. It is believed it has existed since the Iron Age, a Roman road passes through the road. It remained lightly populated till 1799 when the mash land was drained around the village increasing agricultural production to large scale. The coming of the railway station in 1865 and opening of the salt works in 1890 accelerated the population growth.

The well known and adequately preserved Marsh Mill was built in 1794 by Ralph Slater and commissioned by Bold Hesketh. It was used as a corn mill till the1920s and as a cafe between 1928 and 1935. It was however been fully restored to function at 1990 by the Marsh Mill Preservation Society and is a grade II listed building. It is the best preserved wind mill and a great heritage in north west England.
