The barracks is the only active among seven others that were constructed in the country to handle the Chartist riots. They were created to host a full battalion of infantry, approximately 900 men, in combination with troops of cavalry and a demi-battalion of artillery. Today, the barrack still serves its function and is a great site to view.

With a wealthy background and a rich history, Fulwood is a great place to visit. It has several buildings that are under conservation most of which dates back to the Victorian era. One of such buildings is the Former Fulwood Workhouse. This huge and magnificent building located in one of the greener regions of Preston district was finished in 1868. It was designed by Leigh Hall of Bolton and its main reason for being built was to train the children of the poor about industry, religion and virtue so that they can be useful in society.
