Blackburn is a large town situated in the middle of the East Lancashire Hills. Certain areas of Blackburn are quite steep and the centre of town is surrounded by hills. The River Blakewater flows to the centre of town where it is channeled to flow underground. It has a hospital located to the eastern side of town and several schools including a few special schools and two further education colleges.
The town was one of the first industrialized towns in the world, but its textile industry started to decline in the 1950s. One of the main places of interest of this former mill town, Albion Mill, was demolished in 2010 after it has fallen beyond repair. Albion Mill dates as far back as 1850 and operated as a textile factory. Another main place of interest is the Daniel Thwaites & Co Brewery. This regional brewery was established in 1807 and is still operating today from its original site in the town centre.
Other landmarks include Blackburn Cathedral, Queen Victoria's statue and the town hall. The town has a few libraries as well as a mobile library service. The Blackburn Central Library is located nearby the town hall in the town centre and is regarded as one of the most visited libraries in England. The town also offers various sporting facilities such as Ewood Park (the home of the Blackburn Rovers Football Club) and an Olympic-sized ice rink.
