Private Detective in Goudhurst

12 miles from Maidstone there is a village Goudhurst. It's location is beautiful - near a large pond. The population of the parish is over three thousand people. As for educational establishments, the village is within Cranbrook School catchment area. There are two versions of the name "Goudhurst" origin: most likely, it derived from the "good hill", or maybe, from "battle hill" where the last commemorates a battle that was fought there in Saxon times.

The magnificent local church of St Mary, a Grade I listed building, stands on a hill and has an impressive high tower. The church is said to be founded in 1170, and has been significantly changed during centuries due to numerous refurbishments and renovations. The church also used to have a tall spire, but, unfortunately, in 1637 a lightning ruined it. In Victorian times it was successfully restored and still contains fine painted wood and famous old gesso effigies.

The High Street is tumbling down the steep hill from the church to the village pond. The views over the countryside from the hill and especially from the tower of St Mary's Church, which is 150 metres above sea level, are wonderful. They say one can see up to 50 church spires from it! Well-preserved historic houses and cottages, scattered along the main road and down the streets are worth seeing as well.
