Private Detective in Etchinghill

Etchinghill is a hamlet situated at the southern end of the Parish of Lyminge, about 5 km north of Hythe, a coastal market town, and 1 km north of the Channel Tunnel terminal at Cheriton, near port town of Folkestone in Kent County, England. The village has a village hall, a pub and restaurant called The New Inn, which is said to be the closest pub to the Channel Tunnel, as well as sporting facilities such as a basketball court, a standard golf course known for its hills, and two football fields.

The name of the hamlet originally was 'Tettinghelde', which meant 'Tetta's slope', altered to 'Etynghyld' and 'Etynghyll' by the 15th Century and later to 'Eachendhill' or 'Etchinghole', before becoming Etchinghill. For centuries the hamlet had been a rural community, but it began to change in 1835-56, when a large Elham Union Workhouse was opened to accommodate about 300 poor people. It was run by a married couple, assisted by a bookkeeper, a schoolmaster and schoolmistress and a nurse.

In 1841 an additional building was erected to house some of the many tramps who roamed at the countryside. When workhouses ceased to exist, this one was turned into old people's home, known at that times as St Mary's Hospital. In early 1990s it was closed, and the only building that survived is an un-consecrated chapel.
