The town of Partington is located in Greater Manchester and is about only 14 km away from the city centre of Manchester. As it is situated on the Manchester Ship Canal's southern bank, it used to be a big coal-exporting port. The town's primary retail area is on Central Road and it also boasts with a traditional market (situated on Smithy Lane). The town also offers three primary schools and one secondary school, Broadoak School.

One of its places of interest is a Roman Catholic church, St Mary's, that is dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. It was established in 1957 and today it is a Grade II listed building. Other religious sites include an Anglican church, a Methodist chapel and a Baptist church (the People's Church). A second place of interest is Erlam Farm. The 18th-century farmhouse is a Grade II listed building. The stocks that are located on the village green are also designated as a Grade II listed building.

Some of the town's other amenities include Partington and Carrington Youth Partnership (PCYP) and a sports complex. PCYP offers facilities for the youth and manages a skatepark (Screamin' Wheels Skate Park) and a 5-a-side football league. The sport complex (situated next to Broadoak Secondary School) has a sports hall, pool, grass courts, outdoor pitches and facilities for other activities. The town had a railway station, but it was closed at the end of November in 1964.
