Private Detective in Saffron Walden

Saffron Walden is an amiable town with a population of about 16 thousand in the Uttlesford district of north-west Essex County, just 15 miles to the south from Cambridge. Saffron Walden has been a market town from the Middle Ages - since as early as 1141. Now market days are Tuesdays and Saturdays. The town boasts of a number of listed buildings definitely worth seeing.

In fact, much of the street layout, which we see today in the centre of Saffron Walden, is shaped by the outline of the Walden castle bailey. The Castle was built in 12th century castle by Geoffrey de Mandeville, Earl of Essex. Now its remnants - only the ruined core of the castle remains - is a scheduled monument and a Grade I listed building. Nearby stands a museum founded in 1835, which is one of the oldest purpose-built museums in Britain.

A short walk from the museum the parish church of St Mary, built in the Perpendicular Style, is located. It is the biggest parish church in Essex. Its memorial brasses of 15th century and carved niches of 14th century are certainly worth seeing. Saffron Walden has many other interesting sights: Old Sun Inn, houses in Castle Street and Bridge Street, Audley End House and Gardens, Bridge End Garden, Audley End Miniature Railway, contemporary art gallery, to name a few.
