Private Detective in Tilbury

Tilbury town is a 19th century settlement in Essex county. It has an ancient cross-river ferry and a 16th century fort. Its deep-water port contributes majorly to the local economy. Due to the narrowness of the river at this point the ferry crossing was built. Archaeological evidence of Roman occupation have been found in the area. The docks have been a major employer in the town prior to the introduction of shipping containers when serious loss of jobs occurred.

The passenger ferry across river Thames to the east of London is known as the Gravesend-Tilbury Ferry. This is the last place a crossing over river Thames is built before it reaches the sea. It was built in 1855 by Henderson of Renfrew. It carries passengers every thirty minutes 6 am to 7 pm from Monday to Sunday. Its operations are subsidised by the Thurrock and Kent county councils. It carries cycles at no extra charge.

Forts were constructed here to defend London from invaders due to the narrowness of the river here. In 1539 the first permanent fort was built a D-shaped blockhouse by King Henry VIII. It was on the site of a dissolved hermitage in 1536. It has seen reinforcements over the centuries and it was rebuilt under King Charles I. Today it is owned by the English Herritage that takes care of it as a tourist site.
