Private Detective in Sandiacre

Sandiacre is a relatively small (population about 9,000) town in Derbyshire, in the East Midlands region of England next to the border with Nottinghamshire. Sandiacre stands on the Erewash River, and Erewash canal flows through the centre of the town. The small basin above Sandiacre Lock (Grade II listed object) used to be the terminal link of the Derby Canal, which is now nonoperational. In the past, Sandiacre used to be a rather industrialized town; there were workshops for lace manufacture, furniture making, ironworks, railway wagon works, charcoal mills and the like.

Some of the industrial objects were given a new lease of life: for example, Springfield Mill, a lace mill built in 1888, is now an avant-garde apartment complex. Sandiacre has three schools, namely Ladycross Infants School, Cloudside Junior School and Friesland School. As for old historic buildings, the local Anglican parish church, Saint Giles (Grade I listed), was built in the Norman era, most likely about 1160, with the chancel added in 1342.

Like many old churches in Britain, it has undergone several restorations - in 1855, 1866, and 1883. Except Saint Giles Church, there also are Primitive Methodist, Wesleyan, and Free Methodist chapels in the town. Next to St. Giles, there is an old village lock-up and pound, which is a Grade II listed building. It was built 1660 and rebuilt in 18th century.
