Private Detective in Rye

Rye is a small town with a population of about 5 thousand people in East Sussex, England. It stands at the confluence of three rivers (the Tillingham, the Rother, and the Brede) about two miles from the sea. However, medieval maps show that at that times Rye was located on the Rye Camber - a sizeable embayment of the English Channel, which served as a harbour. In the 18th century smugglers used 'The Mermaid Inn' and 'The Olde Bell Inn' (now Grade II and Grade II* listed buildings) connected by a secret passageway.

Rye is a charming town with deep historic roots, which makes it a popular tourist destination; therefore, much of its economy is based on catering for visitors: restaurants, guest houses, hotels, etc. One of the bed and breakfast accommodations is located in a Rye Windmill, a reconstructed smock windmill, which is a Grade II listed building and one of the town's most notable landmarks. Rye Windmill has ten comfortable rooms, two of which are in the windmill itself.

One more building worth seeing is a Lamb House that dates from the 18th century. James Lamb, a prosperous wine trader and local politician, built it in 1722. Now this Grade II listed building is owned by the National Trust. Lamb House is famous for being the home of Henry James in 1897-1916; now it is a museum.
