How to Apply for Private Investigator License

Have you decided that it's finally time you became a licensed private investigator? If so, you'll be glad to know that the process is simple enough and the qualifications are quite basic. This means that within just a short time of applying, you're likely to be a card-carrying licensed private detective.

If you already run an agency and you feel like you're not attracting as many clients as you'd like, this might be the solution you've been waiting for. In case you're just fresh out of investigation training, being licensed can be the path you've been looking for to getting employment.

Which Body Is In Charge Of Issuing Private Investigator Licenses?

Private investigators work in the private security industry and therefore, there's only one place where they can apply for private investigator licenses, the Security Industry Authority or SIA. The Security Industry Authority was formed in 2001 and they have had the responsibility of issuing licenses to private investigators and other frontline workers in the private security industry since that time. In case your agency is also involved in other licensable activities that are covered by the Private Securities Act, you'll also be applying for a license from the SIA.

The process is similar for all licenses. However, the requirements are slightly different.

Where To Go To Apply For A Private Investigator License

Luckily, you can start the process of applying for a private detective license without leaving the comfort of your home. You'll just need to set up a personal account on the SIA's website and provide the necessary information.

At some stage of the application process, you may be required to go to the post office. This is for the purpose of making the payment needed for licensing and also to verify your identity before the SIA starts the process of carrying out a background check.

What Will You Need When You Apply?

When you'll be applying for your private investigator license, you'll need to have a number of documents that show you are:

  • Over the age of 18
  • A fit and proper person (will be verified by looking into criminal and perhaps mental health records)
  • Allowed to work in the UK
  • £220 application fee

You'll also need to attain an IQ Level 3 Award for Professional Investigators to qualify for an SIA license. You can only take the test leading to this award if you study at specific schools.
