Newcastle-under-Lyme is originally a Roman settlement, a municipal borough that was formed by the Acts corporations of 1835. It actually derives its name from the main settlement though comprises of other towns such as Keele, Silverdale and Kidsgrove. Its early economy was in hatting trade, cotton mills and silk. It lately turned to coal mining, engineering as well as iron casting. This town is situated alongside the Lyme Brook and is to the west of Stoke on Trent.
