Between Norwich and London is the market town of Thetford in Norfolk County just south of Thetford forest. Its population rapidly grew after World War II as people came from London giving it a current population of 24,340 as at the last census. It is the birthplace of Thomas Paine a great advocator for American independence from Great Britain. The town is just off A11 between Norwich and London, it previously ran through the town before the bypass of the 1990s.

Thetford priory ruins is a cluniac priory built in the 12th century and is open to the public. Together with the Bell Inn they have been featured in Ghosthunters, the TV series about haunted houses. Other places to visit while in Thetford are the castle Hill located to the south east of the town. It is a Norman motte open to the public giving wonderful views of the entire town from a top the large earthworks.

Along King Street is the statue of Thomas Paine a great author and advocator for revolutionary ideologies especially about America. The statue has him holding his book Rights of man upside down. He was born in Thetford in 1737 and wrote many widely red books and pamphlets. Another great place to see is the Ancient House Museum along White Hart street.
