Private Detective in Tonbridge

Situated in the county of Kent is the market town of Tonbridge. It has a large population of 38,657 as at the 2011 census. The famous Tonbridge school built in 1552 under a patent from King Edward VI is located in the town among other independent educational establishments. It was a very important strategic settlement in the medieval times and plans were made by King Henry VIII to build wall around it but it was never done.

Tonbridge castle built in the 11th century by Richard Gilbert and kept changing hands over the centuries with wars and changing allegiances. After the town was besieged and burnt down the castle was rebuilt in the 13th century therefore becoming the official residence of King Edward II. It was finally taken by King Henry VIII after the Duke of Buckingham, the owner was executed for treason. The castle is now used as the city offices.

The castle at Tonbridge has a wonderful 13th century gatehouse. It gives the castle a great entrance telling a story of kings, heroes, archbishops, tyrants and murderers alike. Over 900 years of English history was written with the help of this castle, both sad and great. This twin towered gatehouse was built by Richard de Clare and it took 30 years to build completing in 1260. At one time the great seal of England was kept here temporarily.
