The town is about 40 miles south-east of central London. Its population is about 56,500. Royal Tunbridge Wells is said to be a typical example of "Middle England". In the past the town was extremely popular as health resort and still derives about 30 percent of its income from the tourist industry.

The Pantiles, a Georgian colonnade, was created when a chalybeate spring was discovered in the early 17th century. Nowadays it is a popular tourist attraction. The town has lots of hotels, restaurants, and a thriving retail sector. For example, a large shopping mall, the Royal Victoria Place shopping centre, which was opened in 1992, covers 316,610 square feet. Royal Tunbridge Wells also boasts of a number of beautiful parks.

Calverley Grounds, a historic park with its magnificent ornamental gardens, is located in the town centre right opposite the railway station. Dunorlan Park, the largest one in the town, has a pond and a boating lake created due to dams on the River Teise. The oldest public park in the town, opened in 1889, is Grosvenor Recreation Ground.
