Private Detective in Tewkesbury

At the confluence of rivers Severn and Avon is the town of Tewkesbury in the county of Gloucestershire. It had a population of 10,704 as at the 2011 census and the 1971 M5 motorway divides the town into two. There is an old town to the west and a newly built area to the east and west for the M5. The town has some classic buildings including the Tewkesbury Abbey a wonderful Norman church that was originally a part of a monastery.

The Tewkesbury Abbey is a very ancient building that stood the test of time from the Norman times. It survived the monasteries dissolution by King Henry VIII when the townspeople bought it for use as the parish church of the area. Most of the buildings in the monastery were destroyed but the Abbey Mill still stands upon the Mill Avon. Its tower is believed to be the largest Norman tower existing to date. Its original wooden spire may have taken the building height to as high as 79 m.

The Tewkesbury residents who died in world war one are commemorated at the war memorial in Tewkesbury. Created in the 1920s, this grade II listed building is made of a tapered octagonal shaft with a moulded capital and a cross. It carries 4 pinnacles all on a broad 3-step hexagonal base. It is located at the meeting of the town's three streets. It is on the location of a medieval cross that was demolished in 1650.
